Last Chance to See Robots + Us

Don't miss Robots + Us, which will end its successful run at The Manitoba Museum on January 17th.

With over 6,000 square feet of interactive displays, there's a ton to see and do that will thrill all ages. You can build robots, drive robots, control robots, and see some of the robots that we're familiar with from science and science fiction.

"The robots in the exhibit are really good at mimicking people, and they blur the line between biology and technology. It's quite eerie," says Scott Young, exhibit spokesperson. "They seem to have personalities and feelings, even though you know they really don't. You know it's just a computer, but still... It freaked me out."

You'll see that the slightest variations in leg shape or body weight will make your jitterbug dance differently from all the rest. (You can take home your creation for an additional $5 fee, or recycle it for future visitors to use.)

You can also enter to win your very own robot! Visit http://www.manitobamuseum.ca/robot_contest.pdf on our website for more details. Robots + Us appears courtesy of the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Eyes To the Skies: A Beginner's Journey Into Astronomy

Have you owned a telescope for years, but all it does is collect dust in your basement? Having trouble telling Orion's belt from Cassiopeia's throne? Does looking at the night sky cause you to scratch your head in wonder? Then we have the answer for you!

The Manitoba Museum is hosting a six-evening program on the basics of astronomy this winter. Eyes to the Skies will take participants on an in-depth tour of our night sky, including constellations, planets, the Moon, and much, much more.

Using images and video, hands-on demonstrations, handouts and the unique technology of the Planetarium Star Theatre, even the most beginner of stargazers will be able to navigate the night sky like a pro by the end of this course.

The winter session begins on Wednesday Feb. 3rd, 2010 and runs six consecutive Wednesdays until March 10th from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. nightly. For more information, contact instructor Mike Jensen at 988-0613 or mjensen@manitobamuseum.ca. The cost is $99 per person ($85 for Museum members). To register, please call 988-0626 or email programs@manitobamuseum.ca.

Ancient Pottery: Piecing Together Our Past

Our current Discovery Room exhibit allows you to step into the shoes of an archaeologist.

Imagine 12 puzzles jumbled together with most of the pieces missing. Then imagine you have no picture to use as a guide. Welcome to the world of an archaeologist working with pottery.

During the Ancient Pottery exhibit, the Discovery Room will be transformed into a mock archaeology lab. The exhibit will show how archaeologists and conservators piece together ancient pottery. Pottery styles change over time and are a great cultural indicator. Diversity in shape, decoration and even manufacturing techniques provide clues on who made it, how they made it, and what it was used for.
