Boreal Forest Gallery

loonThe eerie cry of the loon echoes across this northerly coniferous forest which covers nearly one-third (164,000 sq. km.) of Manitoba. A waterfall tumbles down the rugged Canadian Shield cliff side and moose browse in the late sunset, while a Cree family engages in rock painting and gathering food. Old and new mix freely in this land of contrasts. However, each year the traditional trapping and fishing economy loses ground to economic activities such as mining, forestry and hydro-electric development.
