Travel south to the great grasslands where mighty bison once roamed, the enormous herds the source of power in the rich Native hunting economy. The disappearance of the bison coincided with European settlement of the Red River region. The first Europeans were fur traders and explorers from the east, and north from the Hudson Bay trading posts; they were followed by Scotish colonists lead by Lord Selkirk who established an agricultural base for the fur trade. As settlement increased, grain, not bison, became the major crop of the Red River Valley.
