Upcoming Projects in the Science Gallery
The Science Gallery staff is constantly developing new interactive exhibit ideas. Some exhibits are created in-house, while others are purchased from different museums or exhibit fabrication firms. Interactive exhibits take a lot of planning and testing before they are available to the public, so don’t look for these exhibits next week – but we thought you’d enjoy seeing what’s on the workbench right now.
Lift Yourself!
These three chairs demonstrate the usefulness of the pulley in a dramatic way. Lift yourself into the air using your own muscle power, even if you’re not a bodybuilder! The mechanical advantage of the pulley multiplies your muscle power, letting you easily lift your body weight high into the air.
Bernoulli Blower
“The old “floating beachball” exhibit was very popular, but had to be removed when the Science Gallery was refurbished in 2007. We are working on a new version that demonstrates Bernoulli’s principle linking pressure and flow in a fluid (like air) in the same way – by levitating a beach ball on a column of air. This exhibit was especially popular with the younger visitors, and we hope it will be back on our floor soon.
