The Manitoba Museum and Don’s Photo are pleased to present the 1st Annual “Shoot for the Stars” Photo Contest!

The wniner of this year’s contest is Merlin Braun, with his image, “Creation (Kilauea volcano beneath the Milky Way)”. Merlin wins a Nikon S70 Touchscreen Camera from Don’s Photo, and will have his image printed and displayed in the Manitoba Museum’s Science Gallery throughout this summer.

Two runners-up will also have their images displayed at The Museum. In alphabetical order, they are:

Kevin Black, for his image of the Orion Nebula;

and Mark Golub, for his image of aurora and a meteor over star trails.

No entries were received in the youth category. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who entered!

PHOTO CONTEST THEME

Photos submitted must be in the genre of astronomical photography (“astrophotography,” or photographs of astronomical objects and large areas of the night sky). Other genres of photographs will not be entered into the contest.

Two entrant categories are available: one for photographers ages 16 years and younger, another for photographers ages 17 years and older. See “Submission Requirements” for further details.

WHO MAY ENTER

Contest is open to all legal residents of Manitoba, except employees and agents of the Sponsor, including their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such employees, whether or not related are not eligible. Entrants 17 years of age or under at the time of entry must have consent from their parent or legal guardian to enter this Contest. In the event of an entry found to be submitted by a person under the age of 17 without parental consent, that person’s entry will become void.

HOW TO ENTER

No purchase necessary. The contest begins on March 22, 2011 and ends on April 30, 2011 (hereafter referred to as the “Contest Period”). All entries must be received no later than 11:59 PM on April 30, 2011 (hereafter referred to as the “Submission Deadline”). Simply visit http://bit.ly/shootforthestars and submit your digital photograph to enter it into the contest. If you cannot submit your photo electronically, visit any Don’s Photo store location and submit your unmounted, unframed photographic print or digital file (“Photo”) along with your name, age, mailing address, phone number and email address taped or otherwise attached to the back of the print (or included with your digital file, either as a printed document or as a plain text file).

Each entrant is limited to 1 entry. Entries will be rejected if the entry form is not fully completed and entry form or Photo is not received by the Submission Deadline.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to photographer’s name and contact information, all submissions must be clearly marked as to which category they are entered into: category for photographers ages 16 years and younger, or category for photographer ages 17 and older.

You hereby certify that the photo you submit is your original work and has never been copyrighted or, if copyrighted, that you are the sole copyright owner. You will require the consent of all individuals who are included in the Photo and consent from the individuals who own the personal property featured in the Photo. The submitted Photo must never have been previously published, exhibited publicly, or selected as a winner in any other contest. All Photos submitted become the property of the Sponsor. Entries not complying with these contest rules will be disqualified.

Print(s) submitted must be no larger than 8”x12”. Print(s) submitted should be packed with cardboard stiffeners. Digital entries can be submitted electronically as jpeg files (all other file formats will be rejected) at http://bit.ly/shootforthestars.

Digital files submitted should be a maximum file size of 1 megabyte (if you are a winner we will contact you for a higher resolution version for exhibition and printing purposes). Photographer’s name or any watermarking should not be visible on the image (every effort is made to judge entries based on the image alone and without distractions). Digital entries that do not meet technical requirements will be automatically rejected.

We highly recommend submitting copies of your photo(s) in place of original works, as any submission(s) you make will not be returned to you.

PRIZES

Prizes must be accepted as awarded and are not transferable or convertible to cash. No substitutions except at the Sponsor’s option. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize or a prize component with one of equal or greater value. Winners will be required to pick up their prizes from a Don’s Photo location. Taxes on prize may be the sole responsibility of the winners. If the winner is a minor in his/her province, such winner’s parent or legal guardian must accept the prize on his/her behalf.

WINNER SELECTION

A panel of judges appointed by the Sponsor will judge all Photos submitted on the basis of originality, creativity, technical proficiency, uniqueness, appropriateness, and relevance to the contest theme. All judging criteria will be weighed equally. In the event of a tie, the Photo with the highest score in creativity will be selected as the winner. Photos which are illegal, defamatory, or in any way obscene, as determined solely by the Sponsor, will be disqualified. Judging will be completed and the winners contacted by May 15, 2011. If you have not been contacted by this date, you may assume that your entry is not a winner.

The Photos with the highest overall score in each of the two categories will be entitled to the Grand Prize in the relevant category. The next 2 highest scoring photos in each category will be entitled to the runner-up prizes. Odds of a Photo being selected by the contest judges as the winner of the Grand Prize depends on the number and calibre of entries received. By accepting a prize, the winner agrees that their Photo becomes the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. Winner grants the Sponsor the right in perpetuity to publish and use winner’s Photo, as is or as may be edited in Sponsor’s sole discretion, accompanied by winner’s full name and city of residence in any advertising and promotion by the Sponsor without further compensation, including but not limited to Sponsor’s website or other sponsor related publications.  Selected winners agree to assign all intellectual property rights including copyright, and waive all moral rights in and to the Photo in favour of the Sponsor.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

No correspondence will be entered into except with the selected winners. This contest is subject to all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal laws. Void where prohibited by law. The decisions of the contest judges with respect to all aspects of this contest are final and binding on all entrants without right of appeal.

Selected winners (or winner’s parent or legal guardian if a minor) will be required to sign and return a standard Declaration, Liability and Publicity Release, releasing the Sponsor, and their respective advertising and promotional agencies, and the contest judges, from any and all liability arising directly or indirectly from this contest, participation in contest related activities, the awarding of a prize, and the use or misuse of any prize.

By entering the contest selected winners agree to comply with these official contest rules and agree to the publication, reproduction, and/or other use of his/her name, address, voice, statements about the contest, and/or personal photograph or other likeness without further compensation, in any publicity or advertisement carried out by the Sponsor in any manner whatsoever, including print, broadcast, or the Internet.

The Sponsor, its advertising and promotion agencies, and the contest judges are not responsible for late, lost, misdirected, postage-due, delayed, or illegible entries. Without limitation, the Sponsor, its advertising and promotion agencies, and the contest judges will not be liable for the failure of any entry or Photo to be received.

The Sponsor reserves the right to withdraw or amend this contest in any way, in the event of an error, technical problem, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, or any other cause beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsor that interferes with the proper conduct of this contest as contemplated by these Rules. Any attempt to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of this contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution. The Sponsor, reserves the right to cancel or suspend this contest in the event of any accident, printing, administrative, or other error of any kind without prior notice or obligation.

By entering this contest, each entrant expressly consents to the Sponsor, its agents and/or representatives, storing, sharing, and using the personal information submitted with his/her entry only for the purpose of administering the contest.
