Our award-winning Museum galleries tell the story of Manitoba through the ages, from the northern Arctic coast to the southern prairie grasslands. The universal interrelationship of people and their environment comes to life in three-dimensional displays of artifacts and specimens.
This tour will focus on the Arctic/Sub-Arctic Gallery, where you will view a majestic, 600 kg polar bear as he hunts a ringed seal with the northern lights dancing overhead. The polar bear’s tireless search for food symbolizes the struggle for survival in Manitoba’s barren northland. In the Sub-Arctic region of Manitoba, you will see a herd of barren-ground caribou travelling along a gravel ridge, re-enacting an autumn migration into the boreal forest. Learn about the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous Caribou Inuit as hunters, gatherers and fishers, and about their seasonal dependency on migratory game.
Fire in the Sky is a live Planetarium presentation that introduces the audience to the celestial light shows, known as the northern lights or aurora borealis. It is coupled with a private workshop providing tips on how to best photograph the aurora, and some helpful hints on how to use and set your camera. Whether using a film or digital camera, these tips and hints will be useful in capturing the magical moments of your journey.
