| Test
the universal laws of science and explore the wonders
of technology and illusion in The Manitoba Museum’s
Science Gallery. Learn about yourself and the world
around you in an entertaining hands-on atmosphere where
you become the scientist, discovering scientific principles
at more than 100 challenging exhibits. Each exhibit
offers operating instructions (what to do) and a short
explanation of the science at work (what's going on).
See your shadow on the wall after you've left the Flash
Room. Test your perception in the Illusion Room. Have
a conversation with a talking computer, operate a robot
and enter the Matrix where angled mirrors reflect your
image into infinity.
Do you possess
perfect pitch or are you tone deaf? Test yourself at
the Tone Memory exhibit. It's not easy to pick out an
isolated tone since the human ear responds to frequencies
of sound about 15 to 20,000 cycles per second.
Make your
own cartoon at the Zoetrope. The human eye is able to
retain an image for about one-tenth of a second after
it has been flashed on the eye.
This persistence of vision allows you to create a cartoon
by drawing a series of images.
Leave your
shadow behind on a wall! The Flash Room is made of special
material that appears to soak up your shadow. In reality,
your body, not the wall, absorbs the light creating
a shadow image.
The illusion
of floating in space in the Matrix is created by this
room of mirrors and its computer-controlled sequencing
of lights to music.
Learn how
undercurrent is created at the Wave Machine and feel
the effects of the pulley and lever systems.
Build and
race boats, use a variety of pumps to lift water, conduct
measurements, investigate locks and dams, determine
streamlined shapes and use an Archimedes screw –
all at the Water World exhibit!
With nearly 100 hands-on exhibits to explore, you'll
discover that the laws
of science belong to everyday experience!
